The famous North American educator and psychiatrist Rudolf Dreikurs formulated a theory that “ daily habits are for children what walls are for a home, they give them boundaries and a perspective for life. No child feels comfortable in a situation where they don’t know what to expect. Habits give a feeling of security. The stable routine gives a sense of order from which freedom is born. “

Dreikurs, was able to develop a method based on praxis oriented towards the education of children. Thanks to this formula, the stimulation of their abilities can be introduced into the little ones through a cooperative behavior, without the need for punishments and rewards.

According to Rudolf Dreikus, bad behaviors arise from a feeling of lack of respect for the social group to which they belong. When this happens in a child’s developing psyche, it ends up provoking erroneous goals, such as failure, power, revenge, or attention.

We continue in the footsteps of Rudolf Dreikurs’ theories. It is evident that  the training of children without responsibility and safety in the period of childhood will generate future adults with serious behavior problems.

It is the way to offer each child an environment of quiet stability in which to learn and be educated in a constructive way, forming a confident and conscious personality.

What is a habit

A habit is a stability mechanism that allows an individual to develop skills. It refers to attitudes, behaviors and customs that lead to the formation of learning models in different situations, from tying a shoe to organizing study time.

What is a routine

Routine is defined as a personal habit that is established as truly convenient,  without the need for changes or flexibility. This can be as simple as brushing your teeth after eating.

The benefits of routine and habits

Both habits and routines are vital to children’s lives. Thanks to them, in addition to the aforementioned stable and peaceful environment in which the little ones feel safe, regularity, constancy and perseverance are also brought into the mentality of the young, which will be very useful for their development towards adult life:

  • There are still important benefits in acquiring habits and routines. For example, the safety of the child. Doing what he knows how to do well and getting it done brings him a state of tranquility,  so he develops his conscience feeling capable.
  • It is also important to understand that when a child is born, he does not know the world around him. Parents or guardians will be your first guides in life. It is necessary to organize a stable environment with schedules, routines, habits and activities that repeat themselves until the child internalizes the dexterity to perform them safely and almost unconsciously.

  • Habits are vital for the physical and psychological formation of children. The schedules of meals, sleep, hygiene and all habits related to these basic circumstances are indispensable for children to adapt and learn in a suitable environment that covers all their needs.

It is evident that Dreikurs, who modeled his theory on routines by observing and studying preteens guided by what he called erroneous goals, demonstrated the importance of creating a stable and safe world for the little ones.

A coherent way of avoiding future behavior problems in young people is to create a safe world for little ones that allows them to explore the simple restlessness of discovery. Thus, they will be able to know and develop their skills, thanks to the stability that habits transmit to children’s lives.
