Surprising Research: Taking Vitamin D Daily May Not Affect Bone Breaking

Research led by Harvard Medical School in the US found that people who took vitamin supplements experienced fewer bone fractures than those who did not.

According to the news published in the Daily Mail, taking vitamin supplements for years to help with calcium absorption and strengthen bones has the opposite results.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved 26,000 participants. The average age of the participants was 67, and the number of men and women was similar.

Participants in the study were given vitamin D3 tablets to take daily. This is the strain used in many supplements because it is easier for the body to absorb.

They were then followed for five years and questioned annually to find out if they were still taking the pills or had fractures.

Half took supplements containing 800 units (IU) of vitamin D, the upper limit of the recommended daily intake.

For the remainder, placebo pills were administered.

The results showed no difference in the number of fractures recorded in the two groups.

Among the 12,927 participants (6%) who took vitamin D, 769 had fractures. Among those taking the placebo pills, 782 of the 12,944 participants had a fracture (again, 6%).
